Happy September everyone!

I’m someone who adores the fall. Yes, I’m drinking pumpkin spice coffee already. LOL. Give me days with crisp air, leaves on the ground, and cozy sweaters! I bought myself a sweater while in Scotland that I plan to practically live in for the next six months.

To celebrate the coming change, I have a guest today! Please welcome author and friend, Cyn Ley!

Hi KateMarie! Thank you for the opportunity of visiting with you today!

What genres do you write?

I write multi-genre—short stories mainly, but am venturing into longer works. Paranormal, horror, social satire, humor, scifi light, general fiction, and stuff that’s rather odd. I’m currently working on the second installment of a new cozy mystery series, the first having debuted in PINK FLAMINGOS & OTHER FOLLIES (It’s A Mystery I: The Lost Boys). I also have several new short stories in the works.

Tell us about your books!

I’m delighted to say that I am a top-reviewed author on Amazon for all of my titles. Never saw that coming! LOL

There are currently three available in print and Kindle editions, and one short which is available on Kindle only. The first book, ENCOUNTERS TALES RECOUNTED AND REBORN has the best of the stories published between 2014 – 2016, and ranges all across my spectrum, including several written for other Solstice Publishing anthologies. There are 20 stories in all. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MUYCFBC

Encounters-001

The second, THE OSSUARY PLAYGROUND AND OTHER TALES, has a special place in my heart. Published in 2017, I was living very close to the Veil, my Beloved Husband having brushed through it a few months earlier.  I wanted to explore the Afterlife as I’ve experienced it, seeing it from the Other Side as well as this one.  Consisting of four stories, the book has been described as “literary fiction,” and contains some of my best writing to date, I think. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071JMBPZM

The Ossuary-001

Next came PLOT TWIST, a weird and funny tale about what happens when a demon on assignment shows up at a science fiction convention.  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078YC35LX

After THE OSSUARY PLAYGROUND, which is fairly intense reading, I felt I needed to lighten things up a bit as well as introduce something entirely new to me. PINK FLAMINGOS & OTHER FOLLIES (2018) is funny, quirky and engaging, consisting of five tales. One of these, “It’s A Mystery I: The Lost Boys,” is the first installment of a cozy mystery series. I hope to release the second installment later this year. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BR15J71

Favorite part of writing? Least favorite?

They’re actually the same thing: when my Muse whacks me upside the head at 2am and orders me to write stuff down. LOL Be that as it may, she’s always right!

What’s your process? Do you outline or just let the story unfold as you write?

I don’t have a process per se. A lot of times stories come to me in bits, then build on themselves. I have yet to use an outline. For me, writing is very organic—it will happen where and when it wants to. While I’ll have an idea of where I want a story to go, sometimes the story has other ideas! I usually end up writing all kinds of alternatives. The story will shake itself out. Even if I Have A Clue where it’s going, those alternates are still important to write down. I might be able to use them at another time, and if they’re not written down, they’ll be lost forever.

Most surreal moment since you were published was?

It still is! Reading reviews of your work is always a little surreal. I love hearing from my readers, both good comments and not so good comments. I think it’s essential for authors to keep an open mind and learn from the feedback they receive, whether or not they like what they’re hearing. This is not to say one has to concede to the reader–after all, they’re not living in your head–but they can draw your attention to areas where you may need to tweak how you communicate your story.

Name three places you’d like to visit so you could incorporate them into a story/book.

For me, it’s not so much places as it is things I’d like to do. Go ziplining. Take a helicopter trip over Mt. St. Helens. Visit places where the residents may be dead but are not sleeping. See a Sasquatch, and remember to bring fresh fruit with me as a gift. Stuff like that. As the saying goes, “Life is a banquet!” Maybe I’ll sit down and share an apple with a Bigfoot.

Thanks for stopping by, Cyn!

Hello!

I know, I know. I’m posting without it being a Monday. But this is so amazingly awesome I had to share!

Solstice Publishing is now the home to the first two of a seven book autobiography series by fashion designer Bernard Foong (aka Young)! And he’s stopping by here to promote the upcoming release of the third title!

‘A Harem Boy’s Saga’ is a series of books chronicling Young’s life as part of a secret society of harems for both heterosexual and homosexual people. But the books are more than just erotica. They’re lessons in life, becoming an adult, and being true to who you are.

Author’s Bio

Young alias Bernard Foong is, first and foremost, a sensitivist. He finds nuance in everything. To experience the world he inhabits is an adventure which is mystical, childlike and refreshing. He has a rare ability to create beauty in a unique fashion. His palettes have been material, paint, words and human experiences.

By Christine Maynard (screenwriter and novelist).

Bernard Foong (designer) – A brief history

Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. At the age of 8, he was assisting his aunt and cousin, learning the art of sewing and fabrics/colors matching. During his college years he won several international fashion awards and was already retailing bridal and evening dresses to several well known department stores in England. Liberty of London, Selfridges, Harrods and Harvey Nichols to name a few that carried his designs. His Royal College of Art graduation wedding/evening wear collection was sold to Liberty of London and displayed in their store windows for the entire month of June that year.

For four years, he worked for Liberty’s bridal department as their in-house designer until a trip to Hong Kong, while working on a freelance project for ‘Bird’s’(casual wear) company, he was recruited by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University as their Fashion professor for the next 6 years. Producing under the label, Natural Life by Bernard Foong, he designed casual-wear collections for the Parkson Grand’s flagship store in Kuala Lumpur. After a couple of years later, he was invited by the Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore to join their design school to establish a Fashion Design department. For two years, he assisted several founding members of the design school – working on the fashion department’s teaching curriculum.

The Fitzgerald Theatre Department, University of Hawaii, Manoa, Oahu, Hawaii awarded a full scholarship for Foong to complete his second Master of Art in Theatre Costuming. Now a resident on the Island of Maui, he has assisted many charity organizations in their fund raising events with his extravagant fashion and performance shows/presentations. Now, Michael and I go way back. Far enough that I don’t always like remembering how far. LOL.

As is often the case, we spent a period of time where we weren’t in contact with each other. Thanks to the wonder that is FaceBook, we’ve reconnected and discovered we’ve each been very busy since last we sat down.

We’ve both become published fantasy authors!

If you’re a fan of fantasy with a healthy dose of military tactics, pick up his book. Great read!

“It may seem a fine thing in song or story to be ankle-deep in the blood of your enemies but in reality it’s slippery, smells bad and is nearly impossible to get out of your socks afterwards.”  From the diaries of Engvyr Gunnarson

In Diaries of a Dwarven Rifleman (http://www.amazon.com/dp/1482637057) magic, science and technology work hand-in-hand to create a new kind of fantasy world with an underlying logic that makes it as real as a handshake from an old friend. Told with humor and humanity, it is a story of sweeping events seen from a ‘ground-level’ perspective by real people living and helping to shape the unique history of their world.

Engvyr’s father gave up on the miner’s life to move the family back to their ancestral home in the far north. But the journey is fraught with perils the young dwarf has never imagined, and when tragedy casts him in the role of hero, well, what’s a dwarf to do? The events of that fateful journey have shaped and ruled his life, but now Engvyr wants nothing more than to make a place for himself, perhaps settle down and raise a family. But when a new enemy rises in the North he finds himself at the center of the conflict, with not merely the freedom of his people but the fate of all of humanity hanging in the balance… and the habit of heroism is a hard one to break.

“Impressive work, and great fun!” — Greg Bear, Author of Hull 03 and The Forge of God

The description is at the link above so I won’t repeat it here. At the Clarion West mixer last summer I was asked for an ‘elevator pitch’ for this book. I thought a moment and said, “Hard-science Science Fiction set in a medieval fantasy world as written by Louis L’Amour.” That sums it up pretty well but it’s much more than that. In this post I’m going to discuss the stuff behind the scenes, as it were; a look behind the curtain.

The basic premise is that Dwarves and Goblins were created from humans by an evil overlord in the ancient past to work his mines. The Dwarves discovered how to use blasting powder as a weapon and rebelled against the overlord and killed him, freeing both themselves and the goblins. Once free the dwarves fled north through the ‘human’ nations and discovered that Battlemages could detonate their blasting powder at a distance rendering their make-shift guns not only useless, but a danger to them. Fleeing into the deep mountains they established their own kingdom. Determined never to be enslaved again they learn to make guns that magic cannot effect- powerful large-bore air rifles. Fielding elite regiments of riflemen they are able to keep their freedom against the encroaching ‘Tall Folk’ and the Goblins. The ‘Tall Folk’ are unable to match the dwarves technology and military prowess and over the centuries settle into a sometimes uneasy peace and establish trade. This is the world the protagonist is born into.

The dwarves have their own magic, shaped to serve the needs of their creator to help build his evil empire. Their abilities to work stone, metal and wood are supplemented by magic.

The Dwarven and Human cultures in the book have a Norse background, and their ancient tongue is a corrupted form of Old Norse. Nordic values and the values of the Hävamal are woven through their culture. The races share variations of a religion based on this background.

The reason that I liken this to hard-science Science Fiction is the painstaking research that went into the book. I did a lot of math working out the Dwarven technology and the battle scenes in the book. The air rifles are based on solid math and science- they would work in reality (I hope to be able to make one some day!) Guns often work badly in fantasy, because once they are introduced in a world the technology would eventually, inevitably spread until everyone used them. I took special pains to insure that the technology used would be pretty much impossible for the other races to duplicate given the magic, social, commercial and political make-up of the world.

More of this is implied in the story than is explained; this is mostly ‘deep background’ and we took care to avoid ‘data-dumping.’ The information that is conveyed in the story is done naturally as part of the story, in the appropriate places and we reveal no more of this than is needed to advance the story.

‘Diaries of a Dwarven Rifleman’ is part of a continuing series that so far includes the novel, a short-story and a novella. I hope that you’ll have a look.
